Check The Settings Menu Before You Blame The Game

September 3, 2026 · Marta Novak

I've lost count of how many times a friend complained a game ran badly, only for us to find a graphics slider stuck on max. The settings menu is the first place I go with any new game, and it usually solves problems people don't realize they have.

Frame rate caps, graphics presets, and battery modes are the big three. Turning any of these down can make a stuttery game smooth and a hot phone cool. Ember Vanguard's battery-saver mode made it playable on my oldest test device.

Control settings are just as important. Sensitivity sliders, layout swaps, and toggling motion controls can completely change how a game feels. Big Bass Boat's button-mode option is a great example of a setting that quietly fixes a whole complaint.

Spend two minutes in there before writing a game off. You'll often find the experience you actually wanted was one toggle away.
